A summer heat wave is expected to send temperatures soaring in in the region Thursday through the weekend.

The National Weather Service in Birmingham on Thursday afternoon expanded a heat advisory to cover all of central Alabama.

Most of the country will be in the ’80s and ’90s on Sunday (July 24), thanks to a giant heat dome that has trapped hot and humid air under it.

Milwaukee, Chicago, Detroit and Toledo could see 100-degree temperatures on Friday, WeatherBell meteorologist Ryan Maue said. Heat is the leading cause of weather related fatalities each year. Factor in higher humidity, the heat index approaches 100 or higher. “Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water”. The chance each afternoon through the weekend will range from 20 percent to 30 percent.

27 Storm Track’s Olson forecasts a few storms possible Thursday and overnight, isolated storms Friday, a few spotty showers and storms Saturday, showers and storms Saturday night, isolated showers and storms Sunday morning, and a few showers and storms Monday.

Monday has the potential to be just as hot and humid as Saturday and the watch may need to be extended, according to the Weather Service, which said this type of weather creates Hazardous Conditions, particularly for the elderly and those in poor health.
