Weekly Gas Report: Gas prices down almost 7 cents from last week

Monday’s average is down 94 cents from a year ago and within 7 cents of the year’s low point, $1.97, which occurred from January 29 to February 2.

AAA says the average national prices is $2.20 and Connecticut ranks 22nd with the highest prices.

Gasoline prices in the Syracuse area have fallen 2 cents a gallon over the past week and could drop another 10 to 12 cents next month, according to a price-tracking site. Drivers in Manhattan are paying the most at an average of $2.25 a gallon.

The national average Sunday was $2.21, down five cents from the mark of the prior Sunday. Founded in 2000, GasBuddy.com developed as an initiative to provide consumers access to local, current gas prices.

The market fundamentals appear to be moving favorably for USA motorists; pushing the benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude lower, as it starts the week at $44.53 [per barrel]. Falling prices and building domestic inventory have contributed to the lower prices. For every $1 change in the price of a barrel, gas prices shift about 2.4 cents per gallon, Jenkins said.

“A lot of places like to get to that $1.99 price”, Speer said.

Spear said prices are 87.2 cents per gallon lower than one year ago and are 16.0 cents per gallon lower than a month ago. Significant yearly savings persist, and the national average is discounted by 85 cents per gallon from this same date a year ago, according to AAA – The Auto Club Group.
