Welbeck hurts knee playing for Arsenal, doubt for Euro 2016

Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck’s Euro 2016 place could be in jeopardy after he was forced to be withdrawn with a knee injury during this afternoon’s clash against Manchester City.

Speaking to BBC Sport following Arsenal’s 2-2 draw with City in the Premier League, Wenger conceded that Welbeck’s injury didn’t look good after the striker failed to run off the problem.

The England striker went down holding his right knee after 20 minutes when he collided with Bacaray Sagna and blocked the ball. I hope it is not too bad.

England manager Roy Hodgson will name his squad on Thursday for Euro 2016 in France.

“At half-time I looked at him and he was very down, so he must have pain”.

If the injury is confirmed it would represent another huge blow to Welbeck, who spent nine months on the sidelines with a knee injury before returning in February. The bad news would be if he is out of the Euros, but I don’t know. We need to wait for a scan, I hope that it is not bad one and a meniscus. “But for me, to get 70 minutes in a game like this, with high intensity and the pressure, it’s good for me”.

Welbeck will undergo a scan tomorrow where Arsenal hope to learn the extent of the injury. “I was disappointed not to win the game”, he said.

The England attacker, who has won 35 caps for the Three Lions scoring 14 goals, was replaced by injury-prone midfielder Jack Wilshere after seeking medical attention. This meant that when the Chilean and his players came out a few minutes later to say thank you to supporters, he gave a goodbye speech to a crowd of around 5,000.
