Well-funded, disciplined, Cheney formidable in US House race

On the national level, Paul said he endorses Donald Trump for president after he heavily criticized him while running against the real estate mogul during the Republican primaries.
Cheney is running in the GOP primary for the same seat her father once held.
“There were a bunch of candidates, and a bunch of good candidates, in opposition to Liz Cheney”, the Kentucky Republican said in a Monday afternoon interview with Morning Consult. Republican U.S. Rep. Cynthia Lummis is not seeking re-election this year after serving four terms.
Her standing marks a striking turnaround from her first bid for public office, when she returned to her home state three years ago to challenge incumbent Senator Mike Enzi and was branded by some fellow Republicans as a “carpetbagger” backed by deep-pocketed outsiders.
Paul said his party’s establishment has been more involved in races and has had more money than the tea party, but said his own stature in Wyoming – a state where he thought he would have done well, had he managed to stay in the presidential race – could help earn Christensen some last-minute support he might not otherwise have received. “It’s unable and unwilling to do the things we need it to do”.
Cheney’s two closest Republican primary rivals are state Representative Tim Stubson and Christensen, who rank second and third, respectively, in fund-raising and in polls.
Still, Cheney “has raised more money from more Wyoming donors than any of her opponents”, and contributions from all 50 states, campaign manager Bill Novotny said.
– Cheyenne attorney Darin Smith, a Christian Broadcasting Network executive who described himself Monday as “Wyoming born, Wyoming raised, Wyoming bred” and said: “If you vote for anybody but Darin Smith in this race, you are voting for Liz Cheney”. She attended elementary and junior high school in Wyoming.
Tuesday’s results will show whether Liz Cheney has rebounded from her first, unsuccessful congressional run. They “give me the ability to bring a national focus to our issues”, she said.
