Wentz stars as Eagles beat Bears

Jay Cutler finds himself in a familiar position after the Bears’ loss to the Eagles on Sunday night, one that included two hard-to-explain turnovers, but more importantly, a thumb injury that again left skeptics questioning the quarterback’s toughness. Ka’Deem Carey left the game with a hamstring injury. The Bears limited the Eagles to 3.1 yards per rush but could not get sufficient pressure on rookie quarterback Carson Wentz to make any impact.

Matthews scored on runs of three yards and one yard, sandwiched around a two-yard touchdown pass from Carson Wentz to Trey Burton. He went checkdown-heavy at times, averaging only 5.6 yards per attempt, but he also threw a number of accurate - and pretty - deep balls, which were dropped every time by receivers Nelson Agholor and Jordan Matthews.

Cutler finished Monday’s game 12-of-17 for 157 yards with an interception and lost fumble.

“The coaches showed a lot of confidence in me, and having that drive helped my confidence”, Wentz said. He stood in there and made some nice, tough throws. At the same time, he’s seeing things really well.

On a weekend when former Bears’ wide receiver Brandon Marshall, running back Matt Forte and tight end Martellus Bennett put up sizeable numbers for their new teams, the Bears, outside of Jeffery and Royal on punt return, barely had a pulse. The Eagles first six plays were passes, all of them short but all of them complete. So, if you’re counting at home, that’s seven turnovers either forced or recovered in 10 games as a professional football player.

But nothing is more damning for the Bears’ offense than when a defense is able to take Jeffery out of the game.

Actually, the game could have been much more lopsided.

“I thought about it earlier in the week”, Wentz said. “We just had to stop shooting ourselves in the foot”.

Sturgis’ other field goals came from 25 and 29 yards. The next one counted, and was drilled perfectly.

Night filled with injuries: The Bears got out of Houston without any key injuries, but they weren’t that lucky on Monday night, starting with Cutler’s hand injury.

It got worse, as Brian Hoyer came in the game and Jeremy Langford lost a fumble, leading to another Eagles touchdown.

McPhee was not made available to reporters because he is on the PUP list until Week 7.

The Eagles quickly marched down the field behind a 30-yard run by Mathews and a 14-yard run by Sproles, getting down to the Bears’ 2.

That interception ended Cutler’s day, as he was taken to the locker room moments later.

“Last week, we talked about doing some stuff, but we wanted to make sure that we didn’t do anything to take away from the families that suffered from 9/11”, Jenkins said in a radio interview on Friday, referring to games that coincided with the 15th anniversary of the September 11 attacks.
