Werder Bremen reveal talks to sign Chelsea flop this month

The Daily Express state defensive flop Papy Djilobodji will seal a loan switch to Bundesliga strugglers Werder Bremen today, after undergoing a medical with the German side.

The Senegal global joined the Blues from French club Nantes last summer and he found it close to impossible to break into the first eleven, despite Chelsea’s league form this season.

Bild claim Wolfsburg are in advanced talks with the defender and a move is expected to be completed by the end of the week, despite competition from Bundesliga rivals Stuttgart. He was also omitted from the club’s Champions League squad.

Werder Bremen’s sporting director, Thomas Gauge, told Kreiszeitung Syke: “We are in negotiations”.

Djilobodji becomes the 32nd Chelsea player to have been on loan at some stage this season.

Djilobodji’s only action was as an injury-time substitute in the 4-1 League Cup win over Walsall in September.

It is unclear if Werder have a purchase option in place for Djilobodji.

Former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho signed the 28-year-old from Nantes on a four-year deal for a fee of £2.7m on a recommendation.
