Since mid-September, 11 Israelis have been killed in Palestinian attacks, a lot of them stabbings, while 74 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire, including 47 who Israel said were involved in attacks or attempted attacks.

“A border policeman was critically wounded in a ramming attack near (the city of) Hebron”, police said in a statement.

The parents of minors convicted of rock-throwing could also have their social security benefits annulled during the period of the offender’s sentence.

The incident took place near the West Bank settlement bloc of Gush Etzion south of Jerusalem, on the main road to Hebron, which has become the focal point of recent violent unrest that began more than a month ago.

But critics say a lackadaisical approach by security forces and a lenient justice system allows Israeli extremists to run amok even as Palestinian offenders are arrested and jailed, often without trial.

Four people were left injured after a Palestinian teenager went on a stabbing spree in twin attacks in Israel on 2 November.

Islamist group Hamas has recently encouraged violence through online videos urging Palestinians to join a “knife intifada”.

The first fatality in this round of violence was a 64-year-old Israeli who died after Palestinians pelted his auto with rocks in Jerusalem.

According to the Palestinian daily, the Israeli army announced Ras Al-Jabal area in the East Jerusalem neighbourhood of Jabal Al-Mukaber a closed military zone, spread snipers on rooftops and settlements, closed shops and imposed curfews. Hamas has mostly stayed in the background since the current round of violence began.

Hamas has controlled Gaza since ousting pro-Abbas forces from the coastal territory in bloody street battles in 2007. Israel captured the holy site from Jordan in the 1967 Mideast war. But the Palestinians say it’s the result of simmering frustrations stemming from almost 50 years of Israel’s occupation of lands they want for their future state.
