West Bengal: 3 dead in fire at Murshidabad hospital

A fire broke out at Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital on Saturday in a crowded afternoon hour just as the visiting time for relatives was ending, killing two people.

The two women were killed in the stampede and smoke inhalation, according to initial reports.

He said an AC unit was the source of the fire.

Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee ordered the formation of a committee to probe the fire tragedy at Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital. Numerous new born babies fell sick and they are now being treated at the hospital ground.

The reports said the fire was first seen around 12:30 pm. inside the male surgical ward in the first floor of the hospital building.

First visuals showed patients, among other people, break the windows to escape the premises as the fire continued raging. The firemen at the spot suspect that a short circuit in the AC in the VIP cabin triggered the fire.

State Fire Minister Sovan Chatterjee said the blaze was now well under control. There is no information about how bedridden patients in the hospital can be rescued.

Two fire tenders were rushed to the spot, news agency ANI reported.
