West Brom enter race for Liverpool outcast Christian Benteke

SkySports suggest the move for Benteke has been prompted by an acceptance that England U21 worldwide Saido Berahino will leave the club this summer.

Crystal Palace had a £25m bid for Benteke turned down last month as Liverpool attempt to recoup the £32.5m they paid to Aston Villa in 2015.

Crystal Palace are also interested in the 25-year-old, who scored nine goals in 14 league starts last season but has fallen down the pecking order under Jurgen Klopp.

Amid the excitement of West Bromwich Albion’s surprise takeover by Chinese investors, serious question marks have been raised over the future of manager Tony Pulis.

West Brom have only brought in one player this summer, with Matt Phillips arriving for £5.5 million last month.

It is also stated in the report that the former Stoke manager has identified Christian Benteke to lead the West Brom front-line as he is keen to bolster his attacking options, ahead of the season opener against Crystal Palace.

The encounter will be the first between Premier League and Super League teams and promises to be a fantastic afternoon during the first global break of the 2016/17 domestic campaign.

West Brom have said in a statement than an “an Albion XI” will play the Dynamos “as they visit England to step up their pre-season preparations”.

While the matches between the two sides during the last five occasions have not always been very entertaining, they have been competitive with West Brom winning 2 out of those five encounters and Crystal Palace winning just 1.
