West Ham 2 Liverpool 0: Carroll haunts former club
West Ham were already leading through Michail Antonio’s early goal when, nine minutes after half-time, Mark Noble floated in a cross and Carroll powered the ball home.

West Ham goalscorer Carroll remained grounded after heading home against his former club, saying winning games is the priority, per BBC Sport: “Each game you want to win and score goals, it doesn’t matter if it is against a side you have played for”.
These are the kind of sides that Liverpool need to beat regularly if they want to be successful – defeat to West Ham has always been a warning sign of trouble – which is why it’s imperative that Jurgen Klopp starts as he means to go on and chalks up a victory against a testing side.
Liverpool were disjointed and unconvincing, offering only occasional threats, and while they had opportunities to get back into the game, they lacked the cutting edge to make more of the few chances that came their way.
Manuel Lanzini, back in the West Ham side after a spell out injured, showed what they have been missing recently with a vicious, swerving shot which crashed back off the inside of Simon Mignolet’s post.
Liverpool tried to force its way back into the match, with Emre Can clipping the bar just before halftime.
West Ham were worthy winners, giving Liverpool manager Klopp a lesson in his much-touted “gegenpressing” approach.
The result saw Liverpool drop to eighth before the rest of the weekend’s fixtures, while West Ham moved up to fifth.
The visitors picked up from where they left off art the start of the second half and following Moreno’s low cross, Benteke really should have done better upon finding himself with time and space to strike from close-range.
Liverpool pressed hard toward the end, with Noble clearing off the line from a Lucas header and Benteke firing over.
“In decisive moments we were not there 100 per cent”, said Klopp.
Jürgen Klopp has brought much to Liverpool since arriving there last October, most notably a renewed sense of belief, but the one thing the German is still struggling to give the team is momentum.
“We had the ball, we had possession, we had not enough finishing”, he added.
“Payet is back and has been training with us for a couple of days”, he stated. I don’t want to say this word too often but it’s a part of belief that you don’t have to use the first chance.
Aided by support from Antonio in particular, West Ham’s defensive ranks were solid, with James Collins bullying Benteke from the first whistle.

Injuries haven’t helped Slaven Bilic’s men, though they have managed well enough with the loss of Dimitri Payet. He is good for the league.
