Commenting on Twitter, one West Ham fan who was at the match, journalist Matt Lawless, wrote: “Nasty, spiteful atmosphere inside Olympic stadium”. The Hammers have also had to make due without the services of their star midfielder Dimitri Payet for the most part; the French global has only made one appearance as a sub this Premier League season.

West Ham have launched an investigation into claims that a board member was spat at by their own fans during trouble at the Watford match. “The goals were too easy”.

“He was here for a couple of weeks training with us”, Bilic added. But if we defend like this we are not going to win many games.

“They were doing the flicks and the tricks, and I thought after 30 minutes doing that was a bit lively”, Deeney said after the game.

West Ham: Adrian 4, Byram 4, Reid 5, Collins 4, Masuaku 5; Kouyate 5, Noble 5, Antonio 6, Lanzini 5, Payet 5; Zaza 5. Ighalo took too long to get the influential Roberto Pereyra’s gift of a pass under control and Arthur Masuaka was able to clear.

The hosts looked to forge an immediate response, but would have found themselves further behind if not for a fine save from Adrian to deny substitute Isaac Success. The visitors responded, but Odion Ighalo fired into the side netting after cutting in from the left. Watford appealed for offside, with some justification, but it was marginal and a goal created by supreme artistry was allowed to stand.

A minute later, Ighalo’s goal-bound shot took a slight deflection and went wide. “They should have to do something better to hurt us”.

Although behavior among West Ham fans significantly improved in recent years, the club’s last game at Upton Park in May was overshadowed by the Manchester United team bus being attacked.

His strike partner Troy Deeney was next to get his name on the scoreboard blasting the ball into the top right hand corner in stoppage time of the first-half, bringing the sides level in what had been a frantic period.

It is the club’s third Premier League loss of the season and it follows earlier reports of fighting at the club’s ground in a loss to Romanian club Astra Giurgiu in the Europa League.
