West MI Volunteers Helping Out In Louisiana

Local churches served as Red Cross shelters for at least 20,000 rescues as the Louisiana historic flood waters raged through the region over the weekend.

Thousands of people have been forced from their homes with little but the clothes on their backs.

He says volunteers from here in Central New York will be on two week rotations to Louisiana to try and help them avoid mental and physical fatigue, probably well into October.

Anita Foster of The American Red Cross said floods are one of the worst natural disasters because they wreak havoc and, once the water has receded, they leave numerous health risks behind. He said he’s helped those affected by Hurricane Sandy and some other small disasters. Donations enable the ARC to prepare for, respond to and help people recover from disasters. Courtney Robinson, her husband and five children are nearly sure their home is destroyed and are also taking refuge from the flooding in a Red Cross shelter. The American Red Cross is asking for snacks, school supplies, and clothing items.

The American Red Cross provides programs and services to a population of 8.8 million in New Jersey.

Volunteers also offer support to victims and attempt to show care and kindness in all aspects of fulfilling duties.
