Westbrook, a first-team All-NBA selection, won gold medals with the U.S.in the 2012 Olympics and 2010 world basketball championship. “I look forward to future opportunities as a member of USA Basketball”.
Oklahoma City Thunder guard Russell Westbrook has announced that he will not participate in the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Westbrook, the consummate do-it-all point guard, was set to play a prominent role on the team this summer after winning a gold medal with the U.S. back in 2012.
MORE: Who WILL play for Team USA?
This past season, Cousins averaged a career-high 26.9 points per game, to go along with 11.5 rebounds.
Westbrook’s announcement came after fellow guard and National Basketball Association MVP Stephen Curry said on Monday he was withdrawing from Olympic team consideration to allow a knee injury time to heal. Not a bad list of alternatives, but far from the best and brightest the United States has to offer.
Other US NBA stars who will miss the Olympics include San Antonio’s LaMarcus Aldridge, Anthony Davis of New Orleans, Blake Griffin and Chris Paul of the Los Angeles Clippers and John Wall of the Washington Wizards.

While Gay remains a finalist for the Olympic team, his Kings teammate Willie Cauley-Stein – who just wrapped-up his rookie season in Sacramento, was one of 25 young stars to be named to the USA Men’s Select Team.
