The man formerly known as Eric Welch said he grew up in foster homes and never felt any real association with his family name.
“I wanted to do something of my own”, said Vader, from upstate Canandaigua. “I don’t want to give anything away”. He’s completed more than 50 5-k races, 45 Tough Mudders, 18 half marathons, three marathons and a triathlon.
He has also confronted leukemia and a serious bone marrow disorder for the 13 years.
His motivation for choosing Darth Vader as his new identity had to do with the Empire’s equipment and the Sith lord’s leadership qualities.
“That’s my guy, that’s my boy”, Harbaugh said.
Harbaugh who enjoyed the film, wishes that his favorite character, Darth Vader, would have been in the film, according to WXYZ Detroit. He is now on the Bone Marrow Transplant list at Seattle’s VA Puget Sound Health Care System in Washington state.
“They had better weapons, better vehicles”, Vader said.
A GoFundMe page was set up to help with medical bills, and has racked up more than $15,000.
At the terracotta-brick Zion Church, an organist played the movie series’ theme and Ulrike Garve, 29, a vicar-in-training, brandished a red toy lightsaber and opened the service with the words: “The wait is over – the Force has awakened!”
“It doesn’t end”, he said. ‘I don’t mind, but ask me in a few years.
