What Day of the Week Is Cinco de Mayo on This Year?

Cinco de Mayo is an unofficial holiday borrowed from Mexico but, aside from a cold glass of beer and a platter of nachos, do we really know what it celebrates?

The Cinco de Mayo celebration is hosted by the chamber’s Hispanic Business Committee and will take place from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 5, at Legacy Ford located at 27225 Southwest Freeway in Rosenberg. On May 9, 1862, President Juárez declared the anniversary of the Battle of Puebla to be a national holiday called “Battle of Puebla Day” or “Battle of Cinco de Mayo”.

You don’t even need to leave your house to experience the energy and liveliness of Cinco de Mayo.

Mexico had just 4,000 soldiers, compared to France’s 8,000, according to historical documents. That actually falls on September 16.

But encouraged by their victory, the people of Mexico continued fighting and six years later they were finally able to defeat the French forces.

■ The Woodland Mall on North Main Street in Bowling Green is the site of the 23rd annual Cinco de Mayo celebration starting at 1 p.m. today. For example, in Los Angeles, it still is part of a multi-day celebration of Mexican culture. At 1 p.m., youngsters get to take a swing at the pinata to get tasty treats. Live entertainment includes Tejano music.

If you want to include the littles on the fun this year, try these ideas for celebrating Cinco de Mayo with kids that are sure to get the party started. There also will be a silent auction, pinatas, arts and crafts tables, a contest featuring traditional Mexican clothing, and Mexican food.
