What Inside Out Taught Amy Poehler About Her Own Emotions

Inside Out is the strongest Pixar instalment since Toy Story 3 and has all the emotional-gravitas of Up. Pixar changes up the formula with this inventive, delightful, and thought-provoking addition to its growing store of classics.

Inside Out is a return to excellence for the studio. They’ve been policing her responses to the world since she was born: the green-faced Disgust (Mindy Kaling) is on the lookout for anything suspect at mealtimes (say, broccoli) while Fear (Bill Hader) trembles and the lobster-coloured Anger (Lewis Black) gets ready to combust. But when an emotional crisis arises during Riley’s fist day at her new school, Joy and Sadness are ejected from Headquaters and must trek through the minds darkest corners in an attempt to ride the “Train of Thought” back to restore Riley’s happiness. Like the crew of the Enterprise, this fivesome control Riley’s thoughts and behaviour, with the ultimate aim of creating memories, little glowing orbs that roll in after each new experience before being whisked off to Long Term or – in the case of a few formative experiences – becoming Core Memories, which generate the all-important Islands Of Personality.
At 11, Riley is perfectly happy, at home in Minnesota (which is where Docter grew up) with her doting Mom (Diane Lane) and slightly dorky Dad (Kyle MacLachlan).
Due to a freak accident Joy and Sadness are sucked outside of the command centre whilst holding on to some core memories and they must find their way back to Headquarters to restore Riley’s happy memories before it’s too late. While there are moments of slapstick for the kids, Inside Out is full of more adult themes which will resonate with a wider audience than some other animated fare. The emotions in Riley we talked a lot about are they Riley? There are a couple holes in the storyline, if you pay close enough attention, but they can be forgiven for the adventure that ensues if the audience just takes a leap of faith. When unhappiness is in effect outlawed by Riley’s mother in the external world, and by Joy in the internal one, it’s inevitable that a fuse will blow. I doubt anyone could have pulled off Sadness quite as well as Phyllis Smith.
Poehler adds: “There’s a great scene in the film where Joy has to relent and let Sadness take over”.

For any avid Disney fan this is another film that is all about the journey and not the destination and of course both you and the characters learn something along the way. I know of one middle-aged woman who found parts of it nearly unbearably moving, Pixar’s dutiful nod to Uncle Walt Disney, who famously counselled that “for every laugh, there should be a tear”. The creator of Being John Malkovich and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind had nothing to do with the film, but that doesn’t stop it from resembling a kind of My First Charlie Kaufman Movie.
