What It’s Like To Use the iPad Pro As a Tablet
For instance, with Apple TV, you can AirPlay a Mac or iPad to it and use your TV to either mirror or extend your Mac’s display. The iPad Mini 4 emerged as the clear victor with a grade of Excellent Display A, while the iPad Pro and the iPad Air 2 fell back with Excellent Display A-. For those tasks, it was an ideal device, much better suited to them than either a phone or a PC.

The way 3D Touch works on the iPad Pro is actually quite interesting. What we then have to see is which iPad has the best display. And all this from something that isn’t a traditional laptop of PC. But I’m skeptical about whether it will find mass appeal.
The biggest aesthetic annoyance here is that the iPad Pro doesn’t include an appropriate home screen design for its size.
Speaking of screens, the one on the new iPad Pro is handsome and sharp. I enjoyed having a larger screen for watching videos and reading web pages. Although this information is only speculative at this time, since Apple has not disclosed financial information about iPad Pro sales or development.
Similarly, the two most popular video apps, YouTube and Netflix, have not been updated to take advantage of Picture in Picture and Split View/Slide Over (or native resolutions). It’s just a big iPad.
I’m not an artist or a designer, so I couldn’t really put the device through its paces. Functionally, it is great on the iPad Pro thanks to the ability to handwrite notes and more, but visually, it’s a mess.
According to sources, Apple pencils and keyboards are running short at Apple stores and people are reselling them on eBay for as much as $650. You can use it to doodle on a notepad, help make architectural sketches or mark up documents. In fact, most iPad apps are still designed for casual consumption, not powerful productivity, so there aren’t many ways to unlock the hardware’s real potential unless developers start making better apps. If you use it as an ink pen and press down on it, you’ll get a thicker line.
The $170 optional keyboard case is the most disappointing part of the iPad Pro. To charge the Pencil, you remove the back cap and stick it into the Lightning port on the bottom of your iPad Pro.
If the Apple Pencil is a bit too pricey for you, Adonit Creative, Inc. offers Jot, a line of styluses for your different needs.
The keyboard is fairly sturdy.
And for a device that’s supposed to replace your laptop, I found it frustrating that I couldn’t adjust the angle of the display or use it in my lap with the keyboard connected. Money would be better spent on an ordinary smart cover ($89) and a bluetooth mobile keyboard, such as the Microsoft Universal Foldable Keyboard (9) we reviewed weeks ago.
But after more than a week with the iPad Pro, I’ve learned that it’s pretty simple.
The Pad & Pencil is made up of oil-tanned leather and comes in sizes that would accommodate just the iPad Pro, or the device with a Smart Keyboard. Ergonomically, that’s uncomfortable to do, especially if you have to do it repeatedly, as when you write a report. There’s no Touch ID – Apple’s fingerprint identification that allows for passcode-free unlocking, App Store purchases and online payments – but you probably won’t miss it most of the time unless you’re using this as your everyday computer. Some users have reported that the problem has presented itself on multiple occasions with their new device, though Apple has now stated that it is investigating the issue.

Add all this up, and I’m not sure where the iPad Pro fits or its target market. In the bear case, RBC says Apple loses market share for both smartphones and tablets, causing the stock to fall a meager 9 percent based on Monday’s close. It has to be paired to work; it isn’t a standard capacitive stylus.
