What Kansas City’s Comeback Over San Diego Means for Both Sides

Monday it was confirmed that Allen did indeed tear the ACL in his right knee and will miss the remainder of the season.

The coach called a timeout to allow the Chiefs defense to regroup, and that prompted the Chargers to punt following a delay of game penalty.

“You’re going to have games like this that you have to rely on your character, your grit and all those things”, said the head coach.

Santos added his field goal, Ware added his touchdown and it was off to overtime. That 21 point comeback is the largest in Kansas City franchise history by the way, not a shabby way for them to start off their 2016 season. They were favored by 6.5 points, and they had a 67.3 percent chance of winning when the game kicked off, per numberFire Live. Dontari Poe, Jaye Howard and Allen Bailey failed to make a big impact on the game, especially in passing downs.

The Chiefs hardly touched Philip Rivers and didn’t sack him until late in the fourth quarter. Alex Smith completed 34 of 48 passes for 363 yards and two touchdowns against one interception to lead the Chiefs.

The Chiefs kept chipping away at the lead.

Smith proceeded to lead his team to three straight scores, including a nifty 19-yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Maclin and Spencer Ware’s tying touchdown run with just over a minute to go.

San Diego held a 27-10 advantage with just over 13 minutes remaining.

This was really the first point when watching that a Kansas City comeback was possible.

While running back Danny Woodhead led the Chargers in receptions previous year and tight end Antonio Gates was third on the team, behind Allen, Stevie Johnson’s 45 receptions were fourth and Dontrelle Inman was next among receivers with 35 catches.

The North Carolina native was on track to break 1,000 yards and 100 receptions for the San Diego Chargers before the injury.

The first three quarters, they looked like a team that might not win another game, blowing assignments and getting dominated at the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. The helmet-to-helmet hit resulted in an unnecessary roughness flag, and the half-the-distance penalty gave KC a first-and-goal situation at the San Diego 5. The veteran wide receiver was signed by the Chargers at the beginning of August, but he was released at the end of the month when San Diego needed to cut down to the maximum number of players. You could tell the players got deflated on the field when KA went down as well. Only David Johnson of Arizona also reached 0.30. “Everybody has a great understanding for (what the offense is capable of) when we’re playing well”, Smith said.

While the running back carried just 11 times for an efficient 70 yards, he also caught seven passes for a whopping 129 yards. Now Lambo is a good young kicker and will make plenty of those in his career but what does it say to your team that you have more confidence in making a 54-yard kick than you do in getting two yards with the running back you drafted specifically to get those tough yards for you and a big offensive line that was having a truly stellar afternoon?
