What’s a Whopperito? Burger King’s version of Tex-Mex

The Whopperito was introduced as a test item at a handful of stores back in June, according to Bloomberg.

Burger King says the burger burrito remix was originally conceived by a franchisee and will be rolled out nationwide beginning August 15, given the “widespread media attention and social media requests”.

The Whopperito is stuffed with beef, Tex-Mex seasoning, tomatoes, onion, lettuce, pickles and creamy queso sauce. This mash-up the latest in the brand’s fan-favorite food combinations, coming off the heels of the recent Mac n’ Cheetos launch.

“It’s certainly one of the first times that we’ve tapped into the Tex-Mex category”, Burger King’s North American president, Alex Macedo, North American president at told Bloomberg. “The Whopperrito is a new interpretation of the Tex-Mex trend in a way that only Burger King restaurants could imagine”.

Burger King also began selling a breakfast burrito, dubbed “Egg-Normous”, with sausage, bacon, eggs, hash browns, cheese and picante sauce earlier this year.

Restaurant Brands International, which owns both Burger King and Tim Hortons, saw same-store sales for the burger chain grow 0.6 percent during the second quarter, lower than analyst expectations of 2.2 percent. The Whopperito isn’t in response to any competitive activity, he said.
