Not much is known about the NX (especially after it pulled out of E3 at the last minute), but Nintendo designer Shigeru Miyamoto says that there’s a completely valid reason for this.

So- there is something more to the NX, something that hasn’t somehow leaked yet, something that Nintendo think is big enough to delay the reveal of the NX. Despite numerous rumors out there, the company hasn’t come out and set the record straight.
If there is one reason why people are sticking by Nintendo through thick and thin, it’s because of the iconic IPs which are rarely ever screwed up by the developer.
That’s why we can’t share anything at this point, and I don’t want to comment on the other companies. The NX was originally going to launch at the end of this year, but has since been delayed to March of 2017. Because it most definitely was, selling only 12 million consoles in comparison to the 101 of the Wii.
In other words, Nintendo is planning to work a major new innovation into its next games console, the likes of which we haven’t yet seen from the more generically specced PS4 and Xbox One.
We have a lot to look forward to with this new system.
Speaking to the Associated Press, Miyamoto explained: “In terms of NX, there’s an idea that we’re working on”.

However, 2016 is all about virtual reality, and we’d be very surprised if Nintendo didn’t get in on this action.
