What should we expect from COP 21 — United Nations climate talks

The goal should be “complete decarbonisation by mid-century, in order to protect frontline communities suffering from the impacts of climate change, such as those in the Pacific Islands and in coastal regions”.

In a latest paper, climate scientists have argued that the disagreement over how climate change can be fought wasn’t that complex. Furthermore, the text reads that Parties to the post-2020 climate deal will seek to agree concrete measures addressing these emissions, including developing procedures for incorporating emissions from global aviation and marine bunker fuels into low-emission development strategies. A press conference will be held for the occasion featuring UN Climate Chief Christiana Figueres and German State Secretary Jochen Flasbarth. But, Arun Jaitley was forthright in Lima by telling them that this was double accounting and this was not acceptable.

“What we will do in Paris is begin to manage the risks of completely unmanageable climate change.”, Figueres said. I told the world that $100 billion is not the cost of climate action.

The statement said that a few of the winning activities included a seriously cool Smartphone that puts social values first and an initiative that would enable 40 Latin American cities to take concrete climate action.

“We can accelerate the global transition to a low-carbon, highly resilient development path and mark a turning point in the sustainable management of planet Earth for the seven billion alive today and the ten billion by 2050”. It also raised the issue of unsustainable lifestyle of people in rich countries that occupy lot of carbon space due to excessive energy consumption. The 5-day Bonn meeting was supposed to result in a draft agreement for curbing greenhouse gas emissions that country representatives would hash out and, hopefully, adopt in Paris.

One of the tasks set at Bonn was to come up with a concise draft text of a new climate agreement to be ratified in Paris. Consumers in rich countries waste as much food as is required by the whole of sub-Saharan Africa. “None of us are dispensable”, Giza Gaspar Martins, chair of the Least Developed Countries group said on the sidelines of a Chatham House event on Tuesday. “It is essential that the mitigation efforts of countries are distributed in an equitable manner and the global carbon budget is not exceeded”, said Sunita Narain, Director General, Centre for Science and Environment. It had various issues such as the word “equity” being mentioned just once, very weak language on “differentiation” between developed and developing countries, being very mitigation-centric and just a passing mention of loss and damage.

She said: “The challenge for governments is to bring it down to a much more concise and coherent form for adoption in Paris”. The Minister said that Paris is not raising questions about the actions of the developing world, but it is actually questioning the walking the talk by developed world.
