Soon afterward the palace released a photo of May curtseying to the monarch at the palace.
May, who campaigned half-heartedly for Britain to stay in the European Union, has said “Brexit means Brexit” and vowed to “make a success of it”.

Small-business minister Anna Soubry said Mr Cameron began by discussing how to tackle the problem of deprivation – an issue he had raised at the start of his premiership.
Cameron’s wife Samantha and their children were in the front row of the public gallery for the event.
Frank-Walter Steinmeier has previously criticized Johnson and other leading backers of Britain’s exit from the EU.
Cameron poked fun at the leadership turmoil going on in the Labour Party, telling Corbyn that the Tories have had “resignation, nomination, competition and coronation” while Labour is still working out the rules.
She arrived at her new Downing Street residence with a promise to tackle “burning injustice”.
Cameron noted that he had answered 5,500 parliamentary questions in his six years in office.
Still, Hardt suggests: “Britain remaining in the European Union should also be an option for the new government – it would be better for Great Britain and the rest of the European Union”. Trying to reclaim his legacy from his Brexit miscalculation, Cameron said his government had cut the deficit, overseen economic growth and legalized same-sex marriage.
The financial markets will be watching May’s first days in office closely but with greater optimism as the value of the pound, which fell by up to 15 percent against the dollar after the Brexit vote, has rallied in recent days.
Though she had supported the Remain campaign she is now firmly focused on respecting the result of the referendum.

Winning the top job was the easy bit.
However, once the Leave campaign won, Mr Johnson’s ally, former Justice Secretary Michael Gove, stabbed him in the back by announcing that he would stand for the party leadership, arguing that Mr Johnson would not be up to the job as Prime Minister.
Grayling, the Leader of the House of Commons, said there was no hurry to invoke Article 50 of the EU’s Lisbon Treaty, which will formally launch the process of separation and start the clock ticking on a two-year countdown to Britain’s actual departure. I think of the people doing jobs who were previously unemployed, I think of the businesses that were just ideas in someone’s head, and that today are making a go of it and providing people with livelihoods.
The White House is pushing back on suggestions that her selection of Boris Johnson as foreign minister will be problematic for the U.S. Johnson had previously described Obama as a “part-Kenyan” who had an “ancestral dislike of the British empire”.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault said Johnson had lied to the British people during the European Union referendum, and now had “his back against the wall to defend his country and to clarify his relationship with Europe”.
Cameron said Wednesday it was the “greatest honor” of his life to serve as prime minister. May took the remark as a badge of honor, repeating it to lawmakers at a party leadership hustings, and adding that the next person who would find out just how hard she was would be European Commission head Jean-Claude Juncker.
