Barnes added a scoreless seventh, getting Brandon Belt on a check-swing strikeout with two on to end it, and a ideal eighth.
The All-Star southpaw lasted just three-plus innings, giving up five runs on eight hits with two strikeouts. He hadn’t allowed a homer in his previous three starts and his previous 22 innings entering Wednesday.
This week, the Giants made their first visit to Fenway Park since 2007 and just their second since the start of interleague play.

Pomeranz unraveled in the fourth as Williamson struck his bomb to right-center and Brown bounced a first-pitch homer over the Green Monster in left. But Suarez couldn’t get bailed out of facing Ramirez, who launched his third home run of the night to stretch a one-run lead to three. Ramirez also made a trio of nifty defensive plays. Matt Barnes replaced Layne and got Gregor Blanco to ground sharply to first.
