What will Mike Pence’s speech at RNC mean for Donald Trump ticket?

“If you looked at a calendar this morning, you might have noticed that the presidency of Barack Obama ends exactly six months from today”, he said, and was met with applause.

He also compared passages of Trump’s speech with phrases from musicians John Legend and Kid Rock. “I grew up on the front row of the American dream”.

That’s no accident; Pence got into politics in the 1980s as a follower of Reagan.

He called presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton the “secretary of the status quo”, referring to her former job as Secretary of State.

The Secret Service is investigating a prominent Donald Trump supporter from New Hampshire who said in a radio interview that Clinton should be “shot for treason”.

“Vote for the one candidate who does not need this job”, he said. “The man just doesn’t quit”. After Trump campaign Chairman Paul Manafort told reporters Wednesday morning he would be looking over Cruz’s speech for tonight, Roe wouldn’t talk about the process.

Pence’s speech was, by design it seems, reassuringly boring.

“It’s time for a president who understands the are of the deal and the value of a dollar”, Eric Trump said.

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Florida, exchanged personal insults with Trump before suspending his campaign, and skipped the convention to remain in Florida, where he’s running for reelection.

“After a long and spirited journey, the time for fighting each other is over”, Rubio said.

The extraordinary scenes show how split Republicans are following Mr Trump’s controversial campaign, and were at odds with the later claim by Mr Pence that it was a “united party”.

A campaign staffer took the blame for the plagiarism and said in a statement she offered to resign but was turned down.

The decision to accept a speaking role at the convention but not endorse Trump went down very badly among rank and file Republicans in Cleveland, with reported angry scenes unfolding after the speech between Cruz and Trump supporters.
