What You Need To Know About The GOP Debate

The Milwaukee event, which focused more on policy than personality, didn’t fit his style as well.

After thriving at the last FOX News debate back in August, former Hewlett Packard CEO Carly Fiornia has tried to regain momentum.

The other top GOP presidential contender, retired Johns Hopkins neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson, invoked urban America in his discussion of the minimum wage. Chief among them: immigration. “We started out with 17 and one by one they’re disappearing, disappearing”. “It is a silly argument, it is not an adult argument”. And it would tear communities apart. “We just can’t do it”, Trump said.

Ted Cruz came to Trump’s defense.

The previous record for a primary debate live-stream was CNN’s Democratic debate just a few weeks ago, which peaked with 980,000 online viewers.

Republicans are far more likely than the rest of the public to view illegal immigration as a very serious problem for the country (70% of Republicans say it is, compared with 46% overall). Carson has faced a series of reports in the past week casting doubt on his stories about his violent outbursts as a youth and a scholarship he said he was offered to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. That’s not saying much, but the moderators – journalists from Fox Business News and the Wall Street Journal – did an excellent job of asking tough but fair questions while giving the candidates the necessary room to argue among themselves. The little-known FBN is in roughly three-quarters of the nation’s television homes, often high up on the channel dial, and has never reached as many as 1 million viewers for any of its telecasts.

The candidates were huffy even before they took the stage.

Carson “probably took several steps backward”, Shirley said “He seemed a little bit lost when they got into the weeds of policy”.

Kyle Kondik, managing editor of the newsletter Sabato’s Crystal Ball at the University of Virginia Center for Politics, said the debate winners and losers weren’t clear. “I don’t have to hear from this man, believe me”, Trump responded.

Cruz reminded supporters of his differences with other candidates on bailing out big banks – he is against bailouts – and on immigration reform – he opposes what he calls “amnesty” for people in the us illegally. The next Republican Presidential debate is slated for December 15, 2015, and sources in the Republican National Committee are concerned this debate may become lost in the holiday rush, making last night’s debate a lot weightier until the post-holiday debate in January.
