Star Wars: The Force Awakens has set a global opening weekend record, beating the previous record holder Jurassic World, to rake in $529m (£355m). In Ireland it broke the record for the biggest single day in ticket sales, earning $910,140 (€836,845) on its opening day.
In a cute image tweeted by Jurassic World producer Frank Marshall, a T-Rex is seen passing a medal on to new Star Wars droid BB-8. He later posted two clips of himself surprising a family watching the “Star Wars” trailer.
In the United States, the film has taken an impressive $247 million domestically in its first three days, and $281 million internationally bringing the weekend global box office takings to an astounding $528 million worldwide.
Jurassic World now holds the record for the largest four-day weekend in the United Kingdom and Ireland. “The Force Awakens” closed out Monday with $288.1 million after breaking the previous Monday record, only for Tuesday totals to push it past the $300 million mark.
Episode VII picks up the intergalactic story of good versus evil 30 years on from The Return Of The Jedi, the last episode of the original trilogy.

The trio of heroes who appeared in the first of the blockbusters in 1977 – smuggler Han Solo (Harrison Ford), Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher), leader of the rebel alliance, and her twin brother Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) – are all back and played by the actors that “Star Wars” first made famous.
