White House on lockdown over intruder

The latest jumper was a man, draped in an American flag, who scaled the fence on the North Lawn around 2:45 p.m. on Thursday while the Obamas were inside eating their Thanksgiving dinner, according to ABC News.

The man, identified as Joseph Caputo, was apprehended on the North Lawn of the White House premises, Robert Hoback, a spokesman for the Secret Service, said.

A witness to the incident, Victoria Pena of Texas, said the man was standing with other people visiting the White House compound when he rushed toward the fence carrying what appeared to be a binder.

The Secret Service had pledged to boost security measures at the executive mansion after an Iraq war veteran scaled the fence in September 2014 and made it all the way into the White House front door with a knife.

An eyewitness at the scene said she heard the intruder take a deep breath and then say, “All right, let’s do this”.

The Obamas had spent Thanksgiving at the White House for a traditional meal that included roast turkey, ham, cranberry relish, cornbread stuffing and other traditional dishes.

Security is especially important because the president and his family are actually at the White House today for Thanksgiving.

The White House was immediately placed on lockdown, according to CNN.

The stunt was hardly original.

The U.S. Secret Service said Caputo has an address listed on Morgan Street in Stamford.

The fence scaled Thursday had recently been outfitted with 7-inch steel spikes to deter such occurrences.

Caputo was wearing gloves, a baseball top as well as the flag as a cape when he jumped the fence.
