HHS Secretary Sylvia Burwell made clear to Congress that she is not pleased with having to “choose between delaying critical vaccine development work and raiding other worthy government programs to temporarily avoid” halting ongoing Zika vaccine research, and that this new money will run out at the end of August, pausing second-phase trials on a Zika vaccine.

The investigators don’t know precisely how Zika might cause these defects.

The Zika virus is typically transmitted via mosquitoes, and is especially unsafe during pregnancy because it can cause the birth defect microcephaly – where babies are born with a small head and underdeveloped brain. In April, Obama transferred $510 million in unspent funds earmarked for the Ebola outbreak to the fight against Zika.

President Obama asked Congress for $1.9 billion to fight Zika in February, but Congress has not been able to agree on a funding package.

USA officials said they don’t expect to see a Zika epidemic in the United States similar to those in Latin America.

Travel-related cases are expected to increase this year.

Zika is primarily transmitted by the Aedes mosquito, which isn’t found in Canada. These infections in the United States are thought to have occurred because the patients’ partners had traveled to countries where Zika is circulating, the CDC said. More than 100 pregnant women infected with Zika in Puerto Rico who have given birth have had healthy babies, officials said. Partners of pregnant women are advised to use a condom to guard against sexual transmission during pregnancy.

“Making insect repellent available for guests in public areas of hotels and other public accommodations, as well as directing them to information such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC] website, would help to build protective behaviors”, said Cahyanto, an affiliate TCMI researcher from Black Hills State University in Spearfish, S.D.
