White man charged with shooting black man near home

A man from North Raleigh, N.C. has been charged with first-degree murder after shooting a black man outside his house – after he’d called police just minutes before to complain about area “hoodlums”.

Police found a 20-year-old man shot outside a home on the 3500 block of Singleleaf Lane in Raleigh early Sunday morning. Authorities said a man, Chad Cameron Copley, 39, fired a shotgun from inside his garage and hit Thomas.

The female caller then gives the phone to a male caller who sounds like the man from the previous 911 call. The man told the operator, “We have a lot of people outside of our house yelling and shouting profanity”. Police spokeswoman Laura Hourigan said Thomas was black.

The caller says: “We’ve got a bunch of hoodlums out here racing”. “And, uh, we got somebody that got hit”.

The dispatcher asks if someone was shot.

When the operator asked if someone had been shot, Copley said that he did not know if anyone had been shot, but that he “fired my warning shot like I’m supposed to by law”.

“There’s black males outside my freaking house with firearms”, Copley said. 16-year-old Jordan Lewis, who lives at the house where the party took place, tells the Charlotte Observer that there were about 25 people standing outside the house when Thomas arrived on the scene, and that none of them were fighting or waving guns around. “Someone shot him out of his house”.

Police placed under arrest Sunday afternoon. He appeared in court on Monday, where a judge denied bail.

It isn’t immediately clear if Copley has an attorney.
