At the time, the Tigers were trailing Chris Sale and the Chicago White Sox by a run.

Coats needed five stitches in his mouth, but passed concussion tests and was listed as day to day.

Martinez, who scored two runs, hit a go-ahead, two-run home run in the sixth. Ian Kinsler is riding a five-game hitting streak overall and has belted two homers versus Sale, who is 7-5 with a 3.02 ERA in 24 career games (14 starts) against Detroit.Pelfrey gave up three unearned runs over 5 2/3 innings in his last start against Oakland before suffering his fifth loss.

White Sox ace Chris Sale (9-2) failed in his third attempt to become the league’s first 10-game victor. However, Chicago’s Carlos Rodon (2-4, 4.24) has seen his team average 6.5 runs in the previous four he has started, despite losing three of them.

Just days following what was said to be just a rumor from discussions, the San Diego Padres have now agreed to the principals of a trade which would send veteran right-hander James Shields to the Chicago White Sox, according to Jon Heyman of Today’s Knuckleball on Saturday afternoon. Johnson has bounced between the big leagues and the minor leagues over the past four seasons, while going 7-6 with a 4.50 ERA in 18 starts. The Tigers got that run back in the bottom of the inning on McCann’s two-out, bloop hit, which brought home J.D. Martinez.

Pelfrey was able to escape the inning, and Detroit loaded the bases in the bottom half on two singles and a walk. But he persevered through six innings, then got some help from J.D. Martinez to get that breakthrough win. He somehow managed to hold on to the baseball, but Coats was clearly affected by the hit. Coming in Friday, in 29 plate appearances, Romine is just 3-for-25 (.120) with two runs batted in.

For Sunday’s matchup, the White Sox will be going with left-hander Jose Quintana. “We’re hoping to get him back Tuesday”, Chicago manager Robin Ventura said. Chicago RHP Tommy Kahnle was optioned to Triple-A Charlotte on Saturday.

“I would think he would, but I told him I’d check with him in the morning”, manager Brad Ausmus said.
