The result solidifies New York’s place atop the standings in both the Eastern Conference and the Supporter’s Shield race. But on Wednesday the Montreal Impact struggled to stop Lloyd Sam.

Despite a solid fight from the Impact, the Red Bulls were able to hold on for a victory, extending its lead at the top of the Eastern Conference. The goal was Kljestan’s seventh of the season.

It wouldn’t take Kljestan long to have another opportunity at the penalty spot though. Kljestan again stepped to the spot and struck a low ball to the right, but this time Bush guessed correctly and pushed the attempt wide. Last month, the Red Bulls and U.S. Soccer reached an agreement for Miazga to miss just one game during the MLS season due to this call-up, a call-up coincidentally that the MLS side didn’t have to grant to the U-23 national team. The forward was able to poke the ball by Bush, but his shot was blocked by a defender.

The goal was Sam’s 10th of the season, good for second on the team behind Bradley Wright-Phillips.

While the first half undoubtedly belonged to the Red Bulls, the 10-man Impact slowly found their way back into the match after the second 45 kicked off. The match will kick off from BMO Field in Toronto at 7 p.m. ET and will be televised on MSG.

Sacha Kljestan was a tricky customer for Montreal throughout the evening and he made an impact early in the game with a clever run which ended with him pulling the ball back to Lloyd Sam, whose effort was kept out by Ambroise Oyongo on the line.
