Who was Bill Clinton trying to convince? Sanders supporters

Donna Soucy, a Clinton delegate, is holding a handmade sign tonight that refers to Clinton as first lady, senator, secretary of state and president.

Trying to bolster his wife without distracting from her, Clinton has kept a low profile in Philadelphia this week, attending some receptions and making his way among the dignitaries at the Wells Fargo Center.

He started from the beginning, relaying his courtship of her that began in 1971 when they were in college.

“Donald Trump will take us back to a time when insurance companies can deny you coverage if you have a pre-existing condition, or he will take you back to a time where insurance can charge you more just because you were a woman”, he said.

When the third day of the event closes Wednesday, Hillary Clinton will have the approval of her former boss and current President Barack Obama. “You gave me that chance to turn those ideas and values into action, after I made one of the best decisions of my life: asking Al Gore to be my partner”.

“A real changemaker represents a real threat, so your only option is to create a cartoon, a cartoon alternative”, he went on.

“This election is about much more than politics”, Holder said.

After eight years of his presidency, Clinton spoke at the 2000 convention in Los Angeles, reliving what was billed as his “Farewell to the DNC” speech.

Nancy Pelosi, a history maker in her own right after becoming the highest ranking woman in the history of the U.S. government when she was elected House speaker in 2007, was overcome with emotion as she contemplated Clinton’s achievement.

“She’s the best darn change-maker I’ve ever met in my entire life”, Bill Clinton said. Carter said he does not believe Clinton actually won the Democratic nomination.

That was the first clue: This would be a Bill Clinton speech like few others.

The party he faces now chants “No TPP!”, showing its vehement opposition to the latest multinational trade proposal. “Cartoons are two-dimensional; they’re easy to absorb”, he said.

She leads a party still grappling with divisions. And it has come out fully for marriage equality and broad rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights. “Her core motivations were to break down barriers to opportunities, to help kids and families in this country to get ahead”, he said.

“You could drop her into any trouble spot”. He opened by telling the story of his relationship with his wife from his perspective-some of that taken almost word for word from his memoir My Life-and for the first five or so minutes made it seem like he was going to stick to that perspective. “You should elect her because she will never quit when the going gets tough”. The former president called his wife, who has also been a US senator, a dynamic force for change and sought to paint his wife in a warm personal light.

Geneva Reed-Veal, mother of Sandra Bland, a suburban Chicago woman and activist who was found dead in a Texas jail cell after police had violently arrested her for a minor traffic violation, said that she had relived the “worst nightmare anyone could imagine” just the day prior.

“This is a really important point for you to take out of this convention: if you believe in making change from the bottom up, if you believe in measuring change by how many peoples’ lives are better…she’s been around a long time, she sure has, and she’s sure been worth every single year she’s put into making people’s lives better”, the former president added. One question of the day was whether Sanders would press for a count by all the states, as his delegates want, or interrupt the process to ask that her nomination be approved by acclamation.

Richard Komi, a delegate from New Hampshire supporting Hillary Clinton, said he would most likely stand behind the former president if the scandal were to go down today because it has no effect on his job as commander in chief. The initial enthusiasm inside the arena and around it was clearly more devoted to the party’s runner up than to its nominee-in-waiting. They rallied in the media tent for a time, staging a silent sit-in.
