Whole Foods Recalls Prepacked Food Items

The supermarket chain has issued a recall of more than 230 pounds of prepared chicken and pasta salads over concerns of possible listeria contamination.

Listeria infection can be deadly for young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of listeriosis include fever, headache, stiff neck, muscle aches, confusion, loss of balance, convulsions, diarrhea and other digestive symptoms. Officials said in a statement that so far they have received no report confirming about any adverse reactions due to consumption of these products.

Listeria was discovered after samples were tested by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health at a Whole Foods’ facility in Everett, Massachusetts during a routine inspection, according to Whole Foods.

This follows another recall which was issued by Whole Foods, concerning classic deli pasta salad and curry chicken salad sold between October 18 and October 22, with a sell-by date of October 23. It can also cause stillbirth and miscarriages if contracted by pregnant women.

The USDA FSIS is encouraging anyone in the high-risk category who has/is experiencing flu-like symptoms within two months after eating adulterated food to seek medical treatment.

If customers still have the products within their homes, they may present to the markets with a receipt, and will receive a full refund. When available, the retail distribution list(s) will be posted on the FSIS website at www.fsis.usda.gov/recalls. Consumers with questions should contact their local store or call 617-492-5500 between the hours of 9am and 5pm EST.
