The calculation error was first brought to the attention of corrections officials in 2012. However, the coding fix was repeatedly delayed, and the governor says he didnt learn of the issue until last week, when corrections officials notified his staff.“For reasons we still dont yet fully understand, that fix never happened, ” Brown said. A spokesperson from the governor’s office said that so far, 5 prisoners have been brought back to prison to serve the remainder of their sentences.

The average amount of time those inmates was released early is 49 days, although in one case an inmate was released 600 days early, and others only got out a few days before they should have. The number of inmates freed could go as high as 3,200. According to the Seattle Times, a Supreme Court ruling mandated that good time credits should be used to reduce prison terms.

Inslee has retained two former federal prosecutors to conduct an internal investigation.
