Why Does NORAD Stalk Santa’s Epic Sleigh Ride Across The Globe?
The NORAD tracker follows Santa Claus as he leaves the North Pole and delivers presents to children around the world.

Writing to fans on Facebook, NORAD said: “Thank you for letting us be part of the magic Santa”.
With the app, children can play games or listen to Christmas music while Mom and Dad run errands. To celebrate, it is expected that Michelle Obama will be helping out with the volunteer work, and will be having phone calls redirected to her on Christmas Eve so she can provide eager children with an update as to Santa’s progress this year.
NORAD’s 60th year of tracking Santa involves more than the military. AT&T eventually spun off Nortel, which later spun off Avaya – the company that now helps manage NORAD’s insane call volume on Christmas Eve.
Tis the season to be tracking Santa!
However, the number was misprinted and actually directed calls to the Colorado Springs’ Continental Air Defense Center. It originally started in 1955 when a newspaper offered a phone number for children to call and find out exactly where Santa was at that exact time.
Microsoft once again partnered with the North American Aerospace Defense Command on an interactive website at noradsanta.org where Santa’s reindeer-drawn sleigh can be seen making its way over countries around the world.
Luckily, Santa is good at keeping in touch with NORAD, Gordinier said.
“Sometimes they just don’t know they’ve been naughty so I take all that into consideration and, generally I don’t make them lose any points for being a little bit naughty once or twice”, said Santa. The tech company Google has its own Santa tracker, eleven years young.
“Throughout the year, we can be pretty cynical”, Matthew Quinlan, marketing director for Bing, Microsoft’s search engine, said in a blog post.

While the site includes many old classics, like the always amusing Santa phone call greetings and coding challenges, it also includes a few new items as well. But one day a year, NORAD turns its watch onto one very popular air traveler.
