Why Dole now? Political calculus on Cruz, Trump

The poll, released by the Florida Atlantic University Business and Economics Polling Initiative, showed Trump drawing the support of more than 47 percent of GOP voters, giving him a 32-point lead over the next-closest candidate, U.S. Sen.

Republican Sen. Lindsay Graham, who recently dropped out of the GOP primary, blasted Cruz over the filibuster earlier this week, saying it hurt the party.

“Nobody in Congress likes him”. A number of current and former lawmakers are echoing the criticisms of Cruz voiced by Dole and Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad, who urged voters this week not to support Cruz because of his position on ethanol subsidies. “We are conservatives, we are traditional Republican conservatives”. But according to Ted Cruz, the tide has turned, and now the same people who spent the last seven months plotting Trump’s downfall are embracing him with open arms.

Even worse, Sarah Palin, the Tea Party’s supposed darling, endorsed Donald Trump.

“I think Ted Cruz’s problem is one of authenticity right now”, Paul said.

“He had his moment and he blew it”, Trump said of Cruz in Las Vegas. “We’ve got to make deals!” he said. “He was at 2 percent and then she came on and he did fine”, Trump said.

Cruz and Trump are in a political battle for Iowa delegates.

“Here’s a moon shot: Let’s launch a discovery of the mystery of the greatest computer ever created, the human brain”, Bush said in Keene.

To the editor: Just when it seemed that Palin had gotten off the public stage, she emerges to endorse the irrepressible, irascible Trump.

Portraying Trump as incapable of handling the responsibilities of the nation’s highest office has emerged as a top line of attack against the NY businessman and reality TV star, who has dominated Republican presidential polls since July. “It sure looks like someone was using it as a way to gain notoriety as the only true conservative in Washington”.

“Poor Jeb. He’s doing another commercial on me”. He can make a very attractive “new generation” argument against her, and his working-class roots help as well.

During an interview with CNN host Don Lemon, Trump said he told Palin she should talk about her 26-year-old son, who was arrested Monday night in Alaska after his girlfriend said he punched her in the head.

I wouldn’t go so far as to say the establishment is “unifying” behind Trump – the NY developer isn’t exactly popular among party insiders – but Cruz’s broader point appears to be true: if the Republican Party’s leading officials have a choice between Trump and Cruz, a lot of them prefer the former to the latter. And I know, she started the dialogue.
