Why is Obama skipping Scalia’s funeral?

“There comes a point in the previous year of the president, especially in their second term, where you stop nominating” both Supreme Court justices and Court of Appeals judges, Republican presidential nominee Marco Rubio said Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press”.

“The Constitution is pretty clear about what is supposed to happen now”, Mr Obama, a former constitutional law professor, told a news conference at the close of a two-day meeting with leaders from Southeast Asia.

The White House said Sunday that Obama will not hurry to nominate a successor to Scalia but will instead do so after the Senate returns from its recess February 22.

“If we are following basic precedent, then that nominee will be presented before the committees; the vote will be taken; and ultimately, they’ll be confirmed”, Obama said.

However, Harris, 51, on Tuesday during a campaign event in San Jose said that while she is flattered to have her name mentioned, she has no interest focused as she is on her current job and her campaign. Evidently, he wants to set a new precedent for holding presidents accountable.

President Obama and Justice Scalia did not see eye-to-eye on many Constitutional issues.

Come November, at least five Republican senators will have to defend their seats from Democratic challengers in states that President Obama won – twice.

Underneath all the sadness and mourning for Scalia in Washington and across the nation lies opportunity for the Democratic Party, namely President Barack Obama, to fill the empty seat left by the respected justice.

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump stated in that same Republican presidential debate, in response to a question about filling the Supreme Court vacancy: “Delay, delay, delay”. And, he needs to nominate the right candidate, but that should be easy.

Did Mitch O’Connell really say that only a white, conservative, christian and a male would be only considered to replace Scalia? First, he has to get the timing right.

In my opinion, the best course of action for Obama is to exercise his presidential power to appoint a moderate democrat as Scalia’s replacement.

“The American people are fed up with Washington politicians, and the selection of the next justice is simply too important to leave to politics as usual”, said Carrie Severino, chief counsel and policy director for the network.
