The doors to the campus remained locked Tuesday at the Durham ITT Technical Institute near Research Triangle Park. SMC’s Mike O’Brian tells WSJM News the college is looking into whether any ITT Tech credits could be transferred to SMC. For ITT, it seemed to be only a matter of time after the Department of Education issued new sanctions last month.

“I feel really bad for all the teachers that had to be let go because of all this, they just got it in an email”, she said.
ITT Technical Institute has closed more than 130 campuses across the country after the school was accused of fraud and deceptive marketing. Last week, the U.S. Department of Education prohibited ITT from allowing any new students to use federal loans to pay for ITT course. About 40,000 students who were taking classes on campus and online are impacted by this situation, as are about 8,000 staff members who are without jobs.
“Most of the credits are the ACICS, and no other schools receive those credits, only ITT”, said Beihl. You should continue making payments on your student loans while your discharge status is being determined, the ED recommends.
ITT representatives said the closures are due to an investigation and sanctions by the U.S. Department of Education over recruiting and accounting practices at the school.
The school said it had to eliminate more than 8,000 employee positions.
A student is not eligible for a loan discharge if they transferred their credit to another school or completed coursework from ITT Tech.
“The school’s decisions have put its students and millions of dollars in taxpayer-funded federal student aid at risk”.
Its 29,990-square-foot building was built in 2008 and is located on ITT Tech Way about 1.5 miles from Interstate 75.

“The explanation that they’re giving us, that it’s the government’s fault, everything’s the government’s fault nowadays, you all have to come better than that”, Permillion said.
