Why Roger Goodell, not Tom Brady, is Deflategate’s real loser

If the NFLPA’s appeal to the Supreme Court is successful, Brady could regain the $253,000 he is set to lose while sitting out the first month of the season. The Jets have already exhausted all possible means to re-sign their quarterback but it seems Fitzpatrick wants more assurance for his future as well.

And although Brady’s suspension is just for one/quarter of the season you say at least …

Obviously Garoppolo wont be Tom Brady, but he definitely has the talent to help New England get a few wins.

Monday, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell didn’t have much in the way of parting words regarding the drawn out battle. Dropping the case now would leave in place what the union called this week a “broken system that must be fixed”.

A healthier Brady and a heartier ground game late in the season are exactly what the Patriots need to live up to their status as Super Bowl favorites. In his absence, the press reports out of New England have been almost uniformly positive in their descriptions of backup Jimmy Garappolo in mini-camps and practices.

The general consensus is that Goodell’s mobilization of the league’s disciplinary resources and Tom Brady’s prolonged defense were a general waste of time, energy and a whole of lot of money for lawyers.

On Friday, Tom Brady took a knee. “His reluctant decision to stop pursuing further action and to put this situation behind him is what he feels is best for the team in preparation for this season and is fully supported by me and our entire organization”. His return will be in week 5 aginst the Cleveland Browns in Cleveland. When they went on to win the Super Bowl, it was a still-respectable No. 19. So it’s fair to say that they are one of the bottom teams in the National Football League right now and it might be a while before they become contenders for the playoffs. The Bills have at least returned to relevance over the past two seasons, winning nine games in 2014, followed by an 8-8 campaign previous year.

The 38-year old Brady has been accused of deflating footballs before their AFC Championship back in 2015 when they played against the Indianapolis Colts.

The Patriots were sitting with a win total of Over/Under 10.5 before the Tom Brady suspension was announced – he’ll miss the first four games. Kraft, who was instrumental in forging the labor deal that included the process upheld by the courts, took the almost unprecedented step of opposing the league in court. As good as a player that he is, I do not see him making an instantaneous difference to the team.

His suspension will take effect on 4 p.m. on September 3, when rosters are trimmed to 53 players. Jimmy will have a rough 1st game as he faces off against the Arizona Cardinals’ vaunted defense. Jimmy broke Romo’s career touchdowns and yards mark.

It was a hotly-debated issue but the Patriots and Brady ultimately escaped without issues as Brady was allowed to play in the 2015-16 season.

So if Garoppolo is, in fact, thrust into the starting lineup for the first four games of 2016, then the Patriots will get a chance to firmly evaluate the Eastern Illinois product.

The Texans won't have Tom Brady to knock around in Week 3 of this upcoming season
