Why SpaceX Rocket Landing Is a Giant Leap for Space Travel
“Welcome back, baby!” An over-the-moon Elon Musk has his bragging rights back after SpaceX successfully landed a rocket that sent satellites on a trip round the Earth. The California company, Space X, successfully launched and landed a 15-story rocket Monday night.

After deploying the OG2 satellites in a low-Earth orbit, the first stage of the Falcon 9 rocket landed back to the ground.
“The Falcon 9 rocket we are about to launch has higher performance than the prior version due mostly to increased boost thrust, deep cryo oxidizer and a much larger upper stage engine bell”. Several other previous attempts to land a Falcon 9 on floating platforms in the Atlantic also were unsuccessful.
The landing is a major victory for Elon Musk and his aerospace company as it was the company’s first flight since it rocket exploded about six months ago.
“I’d like to congratulate SpaceX on making history by landing the Falcon 9’s reusable stage one booster from a record altitude”, Orbcomm CEO Marc Eisenberg said.
He later told journalists “No one has ever brought a booster, an orbital-class booster, back intact”.

SpaceX says that with this technology space flight can become cheaper, as they would no longer need to build a new rocket for every launch. “It’s quite shocking.” Musk said the landing appeared close to flawless and the company “could not have asked for a better mission or a better day”.

“I think this is a critical step along the way towards being able to establish a city on Mars”, he said on a call with reporters Monday night.
