Why Sulu’s husband is Asian in ‘Star Trek Beyond’
In a press release, IDW’s Star Trek editor Sarah Gaydos stated, “Mike and Tony are poised to take the series in such an exciting direction”. It’s our job to try to be bold and push forward.

The actor who plays Sulu in the new “Star Trek” movie – who recently revealed that the character is gay – says a “welcome-home kiss” between two male characters was cut from the movie. He adds, of “Star Trek’s” inclusive utopia, “This is just everyday life there”. I thought that George would object because he’s a gay actor who was playing straight. “And because he was gay, the Asian and Asian thing would ironically be super radical”, he told the Associated Press. “We’re just following the blueprint”.
The decision to address Sulu’s sexuality in the film has had a mixed response. But I was actually concerned that he wouldn’t like it for a different reason. “That always stuck with me”.
If you’re going to do this for the sake of it, there’s no point because we’ve seen it in (the 1984 movie) Star Trek III: The Search For Spock and (1994’s) Star Trek Generations’. Boutella joins Saldana (the film’s Uhura) as strong women of color in authority, who effectively execute fighting roles. He says, “Basically it was a little Valentine to the gay Asian friends that I grew up with”. “This paves the way for more female actresses”.
The 44-year-old told The A.V. Club Tuesday that he had a number of pressing concerns about the decision to depict Sulu as a father in a same-sex relationship in the new movie, which hits theaters July 22.
Sulu, in the script by Pegg and Jung, is gay, something to which Takei has taken exception.
As Captain Kirk questions his identity, the Enterprise crew faces a new threat after getting stranded on a remote planet. Takei, who came out himself in 2005, eventually clarified his remarks to say that he welcomed the addition of a gay character, but that having Sulu be gay wasn’t part of Roddenberry’s original vision. But when the writer asks Cho if he and his on-screen partner (played by Doug Jung) had an intimate scene, he says, “There was a kiss that I think is not there anymore”.
No matter what the message, Lin is pleased by the conversation Star Trek Beyond has generated.

“But it wasn’t something I could say no to”, Pegg continues. “But any time we have an opportunity for this kind of discourse, only good things will come”.
