Louisiana officials have increased the death toll to 10 from the unprecedented flooding in the southern part of the state.
An estimated 25,000 homes have been damaged by flooding, affecting at least 75,000 people, according to the Red Cross.
“Just to hear that people are coming over to help out is wonderful and we’re going to need help for a couple of months for sure”, Owens said.
Despite these struggles, Red Cross disaster volunteers are opening shelters, providing meals and comfort to thousands of people forced from their homes.
“Initial reports indicate responding to this disaster could cost more than $10 million”, said Mario Bruno, CEO, American Red Cross Connecticut and Rhode Island Region.
The disaster relief operation is the Red Cross’ largest since Superstorm Sandy.
Baton Rouge resident Linda Sivils told CBS 6 via Skype, “It’s probably one of the most frightening things I’ve ever been through”.
“It kind of takes them out of the ability to help others when they’re dealing with this emergency on their own”, said Ramieh. “You see all of these people in this room, and that’s all that they have at this point”, she said.
Volunteers commit to helping for two weeks in disaster areas. “Flood gauges across the state are hitting high levels with several areas not expecting to cres until later into the week”.
If you would like to support the Red Cross, the organization takes financial donations and you can do it by calling: 1-800-RED CROSS (733-2767).

“We have a responsibility to help our greater community, our neighbors. and that’s why I’m here, plain and simple”, Williams said.
