Wijnaldum on target as Newcastle are held

Newcastle manager Steve McClaren has praised the club for delivering on promises to bring in top quality players and also expecting captain Fabricio Coloccini to stay at St James’ Park.

“I haven’t been able to see Mitrovic or Mbemba since coming back from the States yet, so let’s deal with one thing at a time and get them out there training and integrated into the squad”.

“I can create more chances in the middle of midfield than if I play on the right side of midfield”. If any of the trio do not feature at Bootham Crescent, Saturday’s visit of Borussia Moenchengladbach will be their last opportunity – behind-closed-doors friendlies notwithstanding – to get match time in their legs before Newcastle’s Premier League campaign kicks off on August 9.

“(Aleksandar) Mitrovic will hopefully have ten days working with us, but with Mbemba, we’re still hoping to get the visa as quickly as we can for him to join us as well. We remember how Southampton have done under Koeman or how Stoke City has grown and signed Krkic last season to play for them.

Georginio Wijnaldum says that he is “comfortable” with his decision to join Newcastle United this summer. “The sooner we can get him in, the better”.

“I have been delighted with his attitude and the way he is around the place”.

Substitute Siem de Jong looked to have won it for Newcastle after Marc McNulty had levelled early in the second half, but Freeman’s strike from outside the penalty area denied the visitors.

Who would you like to see start for Newcastle on Wednesday?

Having teed up Papiss Cisse for a second-minute effort that struck the outside of the left-hand post, Wijnaldum opened the scoring shortly before half-time as he stroked home the rebound after Sheffield United goalkeeper George Long saved Cisse’s initial effort.
