Ings was full of praise for manager Jurgen Klopp, who took over in October a year ago, for the way he dealt with injured players.

But there are pockets of Reds’ fans that have been left a little underwhelmed by some of the signings made by Klopp, citing their rivals’ ability to bring in real star names.

He explained that Klopp told him he was a player and a person he “really wanted to have in his squad” which the No.5 called “always good to hear” and said made him “happy”. “Jurgen gave me a good feeling in the conversations I had with him, so my mind was made up”.

Wijnaldum linked up with the squad in California on Saturday and took part in his first training session just hours later.

“I think you’ve got to use both of those experiences as best you can”, Liverpool’s captain told the club’s official website today.

“He showed how good he is at Dortmund with all the success he had”.

‘I was waiting to see what interest Everton showed in me but Liverpool’s interest was greater.

“It’s fairly similar to last summer in that we’ve had big players come in for big money, and obviously my fee got settled which was much less than they cost”.

Wijnaldum insisted that after the “good feeling” he had from the conversation with Klopp, “straight after” he knew that he “wanted to come to Liverpool” as he hailed the Reds as “a big club with a good history”. He’s in charge and if a great trainer like him wants you then it gives you more confidence to come to a club like this.

Liverpool paid an estimated £25million for Wijnaldum last week, the Netherlands worldwide penning a five-year deal at Anfield.

Former Newcastle United midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum is putting his Newcastle days behind him.

The 25-yeard-old Dutch global is scheduled to fly over to the United States to link up with the rest of the Liverpool squad who have just arrived in preparations for their pre-season friendlies in the worldwide Champions Cup.
