Wild weather swept through California, bringing snow to the Sierra Nevada, a damaging tornado to the Central Valley and strong, chilly winds to the Southland.
The National Weather Service confirmed the tornado through video and eyewitness accounts. A few of the homes also had potential gas leaks and gas to those homes was turned off. Crews from the Turlock Irrigation District were on scene to fix a few of the damaged power lines.
Forecasters said up to 8 inches of snow could fall with perhaps a foot at the maximum summits, at the 5000 feet degree. Heavy snow and whiteout conditions have also shut down a almost 80-mile stretch of Interstate 70 and Interstate 25 near the New Mexico border.
The National Weather Service warns of winds gusting to around 40 miles per hour and up to 50 miles per hour over ridgetops.
“It’s possible that fresh snow will be blowing around, creating the possibility of a ground blizzard”, he said.
The state Department of Transportation reports slow movement in the Flagstaff area on Interstates 17 and 40.
Officials recommend travelers allot additional time for travel due to the weather conditions. The airport typically has about 1,500 flights a day.
Higher amounts are expected on mountain peaks and parts of the eastern Mogollon Rim.
As you are surely aware, funnel clouds in this part of the world are few and far between, and according to CBS it has been “at least several years since the last tornado [residents] can remember hitting the area”.
Marin County Fire Department Battalion Chief Bret McTigue says four kayakers and a dog were dumped into the water from 4-foot waves off Sacramento Landing Sunday morning.
