At about 2pm Saturday, officials issued an evacuation warning to Carmel Highlands residents, as far north as Mal Paso Creek.

The fire was first reported in an area about five miles south of Carmel Garrapata State Park, Cal Fire officials said.

Palo Colorado and Garrapata Ridge are under mandatory evacuation orders, though members of about 15 households have stayed behind to defend their property for now, according to a sheriff’s deputy.

Much of the sky over greater Los Angeles is filled with heavy smoke Saturday morning and ash has fallen in some areas.

“It’s certainly going to present some challenges for us to try to deal with this fire”, said Jonathan Pangburn, a Cal Fire spokesman.
