Wildfire in northwest of Los Angeles burns 1200 acres of land

It closed Highway 101 and Pacific Coast Highway between Ventura and Santa Barbara County for hours Saturday during the Christmas weekend.

Officials said multiple fire agencies were assisting with the blaze, including the Los Angeles County Fire Department and the San Bernardino County Fire Department.

Ms Sumagaysay said reopening the highway is a top priority, which officials said they hoped to accomplish by Saturday afternoon.

“Even if we do open up the roadways, it’s still not a contained fire”, Ventura County Fire Department Chief Norm Plott told reporters earlier in the day.

Images from the area showed flames being whipped into the sky by high winds as the fire burned surrounding hills and up against the 101.

“We’re seeing fire embers all over the place”, Kaufmann said.

The Ventura County Fire Department reported two minor injuries to firefighters, one an ankle injury and the other an injury to a knee.

At 1:30 p.m., an Amtrak train heading north and filled with passengers passed near Solimar Beach, according to the same Reuters witness.

The fire had started Friday night, forcing approximately 50 homes in the Solimar Beach community to be placed under mandatory evacuation orders and 30 more to be placed under voluntary evacuation.

A wind advisory will remain in effect for parts of Ventura and Los Angeles counties through noon Sunday, said Stuart Ceto, a weather specialist with the National Weather Service. However, working through the night, firefighters managed to control 60 percent of the inferno and reopened the highway by 2:05 p.m. Fire Department Capt. Mike Lindbery tweeted, confirming the news. Evacuations were ordered in Solimar Beach and area campgrounds.

There have been no injuries or structures lost with this fire.
