Will Democrats Unite Behind Hillary Clinton?

“In the spring of 1971, I met a girl”, he began.

The outgoing president is scheduled to close out the third day of the Democratic National Convention, following remarks from Clinton’s vice presidential running mate, Tim Kaine.

In a very personal speech, he spoke warmly about how they met and her dedication to public service. “She will fight for us all with her heart, soul and mind”.

“If you were sitting where I’m sitting and you heard what I have heard, at every dinner conversation, every lunch conversation on every long walk – you would say this woman has never been satisfied with the status quo in anything”, he added.

“If you win elections on the theory that government is always bad and will mess up a two-car parade, a real change-maker represents a real threat”, said Clinton, who served two terms in the White House as a Democrat. She’s smart, just smart.

She will take on Donald Trump, who won the Republican nomination a week ago. His career helped Hillary Clinton create her own opportunities.

“During his speech, Bernie Sanders said that he and his people are disappointed with the results of the primaries, saying, ‘I think it’s fair to say nobody is more disappointed than I am.’ At which point, Jeb Bush threw his empty Haagen-Dazs container at the TV”.

But it wasn’t only Clinton who broke a glass ceiling on Tuesday when she became the first female nominee of a major party. Others note that she’s done harm to her own image through issues like her use of a personal email server.

The potential new title is perhaps the strangest twist in a political career known for its second acts.

The former president has campaigned frequently for his wife during the White House race, but mostly in smaller cities and towns, part of an effort by the campaign to keep him in a more behind-the-scenes role.

In 2012, he acted as a powerful validator for President Barack Obama, electrifying the room as the party’s “explainer-in-chief”.

First Lady Michelle Obama is also throwing her support behind Clinton, recognising her political struggle for equality.

Bill Clinton then delivered the evening’s keynote address, describing their life together and chronicling her accomplishments. “This is more about her”.

That poll, released Monday, had Clinton and Trump tied at 40; a month before, Trump trailed 44-40.

For the first time in American history, we can say with surety that politics at the highest level will be open to the next generation of little girls. “The third time was the charm”, he said. “He’s not the once and future king, he’s the once and past king”. That’s why you should elect her. (He was, after all, a dyed-in-the-wool Republican.) But, Banks’s entrance at the Democratic National Convention was, um, totally epic.

How much of the speech will be valedictory, and how much will be a defense of Hillary Clinton? Her friend and longtime ally, Gov. Terry McAuliffe of Virginia, predicted she would eventually flip-flop back to supporting the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal.
