“Stand and speak and vote your conscience – vote for candidates up and down the ticket who you trust to defend our freedom and to be faithful to the Constitution”, Cruz said in his speech Wednesday, pointedly not mentioning Trump in that appeal.
The speech was widely considered the most important of Trump’s campaign and career. “Who is going to negotiate something on behalf of our country”, said Mike Lachs, a New Jersey voter wearing elephant ears in the convention hall. “Many have witnessed this violence personally, some have even been its victims”.
“I have a message for all of you: the crime and violence that today afflicts our nation will soon, and I mean very soon, come to an end”. January 20 is the day the new US president will be inaugurated.
The nation still remains on edge after police shootings in Dallas and Baton Rouge, along with the deaths of young black men in Louisiana and Minnesota. However, a Cruz aide said Thursday that one of Trump’s advisers had reached out to the senator’s team shortly before the speech in hopes of getting a last-minute commitment.
“Our prayers are with all those affected by the disgusting attacks in Munich”, Trump said. I wouldn’t say we are just angry people.
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, a longtime friend of Hillary and Bill Clinton, is still in the mix, according to one of the two Democrats. “We feel a sense of betrayal”, Wilson said.
The real estate businessman promised to create jobs for all Americans by cutting taxes and reducing regulations on businesses.
Just before Republicans opened the convention on Monday, Trump had trailed Clinton by almost 10 percentage points in the poll.
The Republican nominee also addressed recent terrorist attacks in the United States and overseas.
Trump also hinted that he might seek revenge down he road. Underscoring his unorthodox candidacy, Trump reasserted the hard-line immigration policies that fired up conservatives in the primary but broke with many in his party by promising protections for gays and lesbians. He noted violent crime has recently risen in some cities, “but we’re not going to make good decisions based on fears that don’t have a basis in fact”.
“We must have the best intelligence gathering operation in the world”.
“Remember”, Trump said toward the end of his 77-minute speech”, all of the people telling you you can’t have the country you want are the same people who said, ‘Trump doesn’t have a chance of being here tonight.
“Let’s defeat her in November”, Trump replied.

The move renews questions about whether Trump will follow a more traditional playbook in the general election against presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, or hang onto grievances from a bitter Republican primary campaign.
