Multiple national and local outlets in SC have tied Muschamp’s name to the SC opening but attempts to contact Muschamp to verify such reports have been unsuccessful at this time.

The fiery former Georgia safety coached under Nick Saban at LSU and with Miami Dolphins before stints as the defensive coordinator at Auburn and Texas.

During Auburn’s 6-6 season in 2015, Muschamp struggled to find consistent personnel in his first year with the Tigers and the defensive numbers suffered early. It paid him $1.6 million this year and is set to increase by $100,000 in each of the next two seasons. Until this year, each of his SEC defenses had finished in the nation’s top 15 in fewest points allowed.

According to ESPN’s Chris Low, former Florida Gators head coach Will Muschamp will have a formal interview with the South Carolina Gamecocks later in the week.

Muschamp’s defensive staff would nearly certainly include current Auburn defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson and linebackers coach Lance Thompson, with Robinson as defensive coordinator.

But Muschamp isn’t the only person interviewing in Columbia: aside from the interim head coach Shawn Elliot, the Gamecocks are also reportedly interested in Arizona Wildcats head coach Rich Rodriguez, according to FOX Sports college football reporter Bruce Feldman.

Riley runs an offense based on the Air Raid system of Mike Leach, who coached Texas Tech when Riley was a Red Raiders quarterback.

FoxSports.com initially reported on the Gamecocks’ interest in the two. Schiano compiled a 68-67 record at Rutgers before being hired to the NFL.

Another head coach who has been mentioned as a potential candidate at USC, North Carolina’s Larry Fedora, is working on a “long-term deal” to remain in Chapel Hill, according to a Scout website which covers the Tar Heels.

Shawn Elliott feels good about in the vision for the future of SC football that he laid out this week to athletics director Ray Tanner.

Of course, that interview would be pertaining to South Carolina’s head coaching vacancy, which was created with legendary coach Steve Spurrier chose to retire during the season.

Tanner said this week he was down to a short list of candidates, and hoped to have a new coach in place by the end of next week.
